Here are some frequently asked questions (and answers) about WordCamp Ottawa. If you have any more questions, feel free to get in touch.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a free web publishing tool that powers millions of sites (big and small!) around the globe. Originally created for blogging, WordPress has evolved to become one of the web’s most dominant Content Management Systems (CMS). It powers over 25% of the internet! Learn more.

What’s the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com?

WordPress.org is free software that anyone can download and use. WordPress.com is a blog hosting service built on the WordPress.org software. WordPress.org is a good choice for individuals and organizations looking for a more powerful, customized WordPress solution. WordPress.com is good for those who simply want to start a blog. Where is WordCamp Ottawa taking place?

WordCamp Ottawa 2017 is taking place at Carleton University. There will be Workshops on Thursday, July 20th, 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and the WordCamp itself is Saturday, July 22nd – July 23rd. Learn more.

Should I bring a print-out of my ticket?

Print-outs aren’t necessary – we do everything digitally! Just bring your ID and we’ll take care of the rest.

What time does WordCamp Ottawa start and end?

Conference registration begins on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. Please arrive around that time so we can get everyone checked in at the Registration Desk. Opening Announcements begin at 8:45 a.m. and speakers start promptly at 9:00 a.m. You don’t want to be late! The Saturday presentations will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., and we plan to have a networking get-together on Saturday beginning at 6:15 p.m. The Main Camp on Sunday runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

What is a Happiness Bar?

The Happiness Bar is a special activity at WordCamp where local and visiting WordPress experts offer help and advice to other attendees who come up to the Bar with their WordPress questions.

Should I bring my laptop?

You are welcome to bring any tool you wish! Laptops are not required, but we do not provide any. If you plan on attending a workshop, please bring your laptop fully charged!

Will there be wireless Internet?

Yes! WiFi will be provided on both days. We’ll have details on how to connect at check-in.

Can I tweet during the sessions? Can I blog about it afterwards?

Please do! There will be many people tuning in to see what’s going on. Use #wcottawa or #wcott so we can all follow the conversation. If you plan to live blog and post it on your website, let us know and we’ll post a link to your site when we do our final roundup post. We’ve trended top tweet for the past two years in a row, and plan on doing the same this year as well!
